Sowing Flower Seeds: Depth, Spacing, and Moisture for Beginners

Here’s what to know about planting flower seeds: The seed doesn’t need much potting mix around it to start sprouting, but it needs some. Seeds come in different sizes, and if you plant them too deep, the emerging seedling will have a harder time reaching the surface. Tiny seeds may need to be covered near the surface, but larger ones can generally be sown deeper. Follow the instructions on the packet to find out the best planting depth, but as a rough guide, the cover shouldn’t be thicker than the seed itself.

Test your sowing process with one small container before doing an entire tray of seeds. Fill a container with potting mix, and level the surface, lightly but firmly enough to create a smooth bed but not so much that it’s compressed. Plant the seeds at the recommended depth, cover them, and water to get a nice moist surface, without shifting the seeds around. Doing this on a small scale will help you learn how your potting mix works before you plant a whole tray of flower seeds.

Planting depth isn’t the only consideration. Sowing seeds close together looks like a good way to use up space, especially if they’re tiny, but too many seeds in one spot means you’ll have to do a lot more work in the future. Overcrowded seedlings will compete for light and nutrients, and their leaves will quickly start to overlap. They’ll also suffer from poor airflow. Planting your seeds with adequate space will allow each one to grow well-developed leaves, and make thinning less painful if you need to thin them out later.

Sowing seeds isn’t the end of the story, either. Most beginners struggle to provide the right amount of moisture. You need to water enough to help the seeds germinate, but overwatering can reduce oxygen available to the seedling’s developing roots. The surface shouldn’t alternate between soaking wet and bone dry. Check your potting mix frequently and water as necessary. Use a watering can with a gentle flow to avoid washing away the seeds or causing them to pile up in one corner.

The containers you use also affect moisture retention. Make sure you’re using seed trays and starter pots with drainage holes to prevent water from pooling. Standing water may not show on the surface but will saturate the potting mix below. Conversely, using very small cells can cause them to dry out too fast. Rather than relying on a schedule, check the moisture level by looking at the surface, feeling the potting mix, and checking whether there is still moisture remaining below the surface.

Don’t panic if some seeds don’t sprout. There are a variety of reasons why this happens, because germination times differ depending on the type of flower, seed quality, environmental factors such as temperature and moisture, and lighting conditions. Instead, pay attention to how you’re doing and try to maintain consistency. Label your containers, make sure your planting depth is about the same for all of them, don’t put too many seeds in the same spot, and change one thing at a time if your first batch doesn’t germinate. This will help you determine what you need to adjust.

When you’re ready to sow your next batch, use fewer seeds than you think you need, and give yourself room to plant them properly. Decide on your planting depth, space them out appropriately, water the potting mix so it’s evenly moist, and place your tray in the right environment for your flower. Carefully preparing your seed starting process will make caring for your seedlings much easier.
